Canvas - New Quizzes

What is New Quizzes?

  • New Quizzes is the latest Quiz engine in Canvas which will eventually replace the classic quizzes currently being used in Canvas.
  • Teachers can use New Quizzes to create quizzes using a variety of new questions types as well as those included in the Classic Quizzes.
  • New Quizzes display as an assignments in the Assignments page as an LTI/External tool.

Create a Quiz with New Quizzes

  1. Navigate to Quizzes and select + Quiz
  2. From the list of Quiz Engines, select New Quizzes
    1. You may optionally choose to remember the choice to always use New Quizzes.
  3. Click Submit. 
  4. Enter a Quiz title.
  5. Enter the maximum points possible for the quiz.
  6. Enter the dates of availability.
  7. Select Build to begin adding questions to the quiz.
  8. Click + to add questions to the quiz.
  9. Select appropriate question type. 
    1. Optional: Add question to Item Bank.
  10.  Select Settings tab to adjust quiz settings.
  11. Click Return in the upper portion of the page to exit Build mode.
  12. Publish Quiz when it's ready for use.

Add Random Questions in New Quizzes

NOTE: Item banks must be first created to randomly assign questions to a quiz in New Quizzes

  1. Navigate to Quizzes and select + Quiz
  2. From the list of Quiz Engines, select New Quizzes
    1. You may optionally choose to remember the choice to always use New Quizzes.
  3. Click Submit. 
  4. Enter a Quiz title.
  5. Enter the maximum points possible for the quiz.
  6. Enter the dates of availability.
  7. Select Build to begin adding questions to the quiz.
  8. Click + to add questions to the quiz.
  9. Select the Item Bank folder icon in the question type window.

  1. Filter By "Shared with Courses" or "Shared with Me".
  2. Select title of the item bank you want to insert questions from.
  3. Select + All/Random to add this item bank to the quiz.
  4. Click X to close the window. The item bank will now appear in the quiz.
  5. Select Edit to change how the item bank questions are administered.
  6. Select Randomly select questions option.
  7. Select the number of questions to be used from item bank and enter the point value per question.
  8. Click Done to save.
  9.  Select Settings tab to adjust quiz settings.
  10. Click Return in the upper portion of the page to exit Build mode.
  11. Publish Quiz when it's ready for use.
