New Quizzes - Allow Extra Time on Quizzes
New Quizzes - Allow Extra Time on Quizzes
Some instructors will think they need to create a separate quiz for students needing extra time, such as an accommodation for student with a disability or simply if the student missed the quiz.
In fact having 2 separate quizzes would create the dynamic of having 2 grade items for the same quiz and could mess up the grade book point structure and potentially miscalculate the final course grade.
Canvas has solved this issue internally with the quizzes and assignments tools.
The Moderate page in New Quizzes allows you to view student results and manage student accommodations, attempts, and time limits.
Part One: How To Provide Extra Time For a Student Taking a Quiz
Click on the quiz.
Select
Build
and then select the tab
Moderate
Locate the student(s) needing extra time and then click the Pencil icon next to each student's name.
Under Time Adjustments, change None to Give Additional Time.
Enter the appropriate number of hours or minutes of extra time allotted for the student.
Click
Apply
.
The Accommodations column will now display the extra amount of time the student now has.
Repeat this process for any additional student needing the accommodation.
NOTE
:
The above process does not actually give the students extra time IF the dates of availability do not accommodate the extra time. For example if the quiz availability is only for 1 hour, the extra time allotted above would not work alone if the accommodation is intended for the student to have 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete the quiz.
The due date/Until Date will also need to be extended for the selected student(s).
This is also applicable if the instructor is wanting to give certain students a different date and/or time to take the quiz.
This can also be done IF a student completely missed a quiz and the teacher wants to allow the student an opportunity to take the quiz at a later date even if the original time has passed.
Part Two: How to Extend Due Date or "Time Shift" a Quiz For a Student
Click on the quiz.
Scroll toward the bottom of the quiz settings and you will see the
Assign To
section
.
In the Assign To section you will see a
+Assign To
button. Click
+ Assign To
. A new date of availability window will appear.
In the new
Assign To
field begin to enter the name of a student who will need the new date/time to take the quiz. Canvas will begin to auto fill. Select the student's name.
Repeat for each student who will take the test at this later date/time.
Enter the Due date, Available Date and Until date for these students. This is where/when you could add the longer due date/until date for the extra time you entered in the first section
